D4D took a field trip not long ago to visit what is perhaps the only place within the city limits of Chicago to obtain affordable (i.e., used) Durable Medical Equipment. It’s called Heart to Heart, and it’s a ministry located at St. Gertrude’s Catholic Church, 6214 N. Glenwood, 773-973-5464. Heart to Heart is open Mondays to Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. In their basement storage space you’ll find lots of canes, crutches, commodes, wheelchairs, and other equipment of all sorts. The question is, why is this the only place in the city limits where the poor, the disadvantaged, and others in need can get lightly used devices for mobility? We were told that people often come from miles away, taking one bus after another, to get to the lending closet. Our goal is to replicate this type of service in the parts of the city where people need it. Do you know of a church in the inner city that might want to serve as a distribution point, much like Heart to Heart? Let us know.
